The last time I gave away Carol McAdams Moore’s book, Just Sayin’, I had quite a few responses. Little did I know what an award-winning combination Carol had created when she wrote these two books. Today, I’m giving away the boy’s version, called Dare U 2 Open This Book.
What’s so great about this book? Let me tell you why I recommend it for boys 8-12 years old:
- Like Just Sayin’, it’s full of action and fun. The words come in bite-size bits for busy boys who can’t be bothered with long, in-depth paragraphs. (As a writer, I know it’s actually much more difficult to write the short bits than the long paragraphs!)
- They can jump around in the book, choosing what they want to do that particular day. Who cares if they read and do the activities in order? Nobody is going to say there’s a right way to do the devos. If they want to just read and reflect — fine! If they want to doodle and scribble — fine!
- It’s cool looking. It really, truly looks like something boys might read without embarrassment. I know how they are. Most guys are careful not too look too smart, too religious, too nerdy. A book with a dog wearing goggles, the word “Dare,” and the bits of duct tape should adequately camouflage this book.
- It isn’t shy in sharing The Word. Sometimes devotional books that attempt coolness also shy away from the Bible. This one has Bible verses on every two-page devotion. It also has questions and thought-provoking activities that will get the guys to think about their faith.
Dare U 2 Open This Book was a 2015 Christian Retailing’s Best Award nominee. It is also a 2015 Crystal Kite Award nominee for the Midwest Division (Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio). SCBWI members may vote for the Crystal Kite Award in their regional division. Round One: April 1- April 14th
Round Two: April 18-April 30th. http://www.scbwi.org/about/
